ghost of hateful-mom commandeers computer

Posted by trouble on March 25, 2002, at 12:23:14

Hey all,

Hope not to enervate w/ my usual knuckleheaded computer probs but let me say first I appreciate everyone's time and patience, but have yet to understand one response to all of my prior questions regarding how to cooperate w/this devil-machine. So, if anyone wants to assist me w/this one, could we do it by email, and go slow, so I can ask all the stupid embarrassing questions in private.
But first, Is it my attitude? Am I not "honoring" this 21st century contribution of applied science to my wretched peon hairspray existence?
I don't care, I AM angry, I can't get rid of all the pornographic messages on my email, there were 18 yesterday, and one message pretended to be coming from an ASHRAM. A sacred temple. This is what my family did to my trust, innocence and reality-based world-view, it's not only dishonest, it's harming!

Yes I want to get AOL to stop all of these emails, but I also want to sue or shut down or legislate the complete annihilation of the companies who do this. There must be some sort of decisive action indicated, nothing against pornography, but I can't understand 3 things:

#1: Dirty movies are not hard to come by, (sorry, play on words). I could get all the porny I need at the neighborhood pornography store, it's legal man, it's out there, so how can all these companies stay in business when what they're selling is so omnipresent?

#2: When are they gonna realize I'm not buying? How can their constant solicitation of non-buyers prove cost-effective, aren't they wasting alot of time and money in pursuit of nothing?

#3: How can they get away w/ the deception? An Ashram, for Allah's sake! Do they "know" somehow that I, personally would be amenable to opening a message from a Buddhist community? How do they know that?!

I'm gonna pick up a computer-for-dummies book nexttime I go to library. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Really, the easiest thing is to get off AOL.

You can't imagine how much easier the internet is without the bottleneck bullshit of AOL--which nobody needs, but they aren't tellin'. Get another ISP. It's bliss.

I hate it too.

The standard advice is *dont reply* to these spam- all it does is verify that the email is a real one (they guess at millions of possibilities).

When I'm really fed up (usually with particularly filthy porn related messages), I email the webmaster if its a large recognisable ISP (eg yahoo) and tell them that one of their subscribers is probably breaking their regulations. But I dont know if the ISPs bother to act, and its really easy for the spammers to set up a new email elsewhere.

I suspect the sad fact is that a lot of people do use the internet to search for porn.

Another thing you can do is set up 'rules' in your email- I know someone who deletes anything with $ or sex or porn or millions in the subject! Wont catch them all, tho.

Is your email mentioned anywhere on a webpage? Does it need to be? You will get more spam if it is. Changing your ISP and getting a new email address will help.

Unfortunately, you'll never get away from spam completely. Open anything warily- think of it like always having some junk mail in amoung your post that you have to sift out. You cant tell from the subject line which is which.

Delete and forget it, if at all possible.

Fi
