best choice of partner? 2 bipolar or 1 normal?

Posted by Nina78 on June 3, 2006, at 12:23:17

A theoretical question, although I'm sure some of you here have experiences in this field. What would be a better choice of partner for a bipolar, another bipolar or a normal/stable person?
I guess both have their pros & cons...

Your question got me thinking about this. I didn't have an answer right away, but after a few thoughts, this is what I came up with. My bipolar paired with my wife's "normality" does not work very well right now. I am working on that one aside.

Granted every couple has their disagreements.

A normal/normal couple has "regular" disagreements.

A normal/bipolar couple has more strife due to the unpredictability of the bipolar.

The bipolar/bipolar has even more because the chances of both bipolars being on the same mood level at the same time would be virtually impossible.

The better partner would be the informed partner. One not in denial. One not wedded to an idea of how somebody else is "supposed to" be.

My mental state forces things on me that I would never choose. But, I always do my best. Always.

I don't think choosing a partner by diagnosis, or absence thereof, is a wise criterion.

Do you perhaps think a bipolar partner might be more understanding?
I agree that it is best to be informed (both sides!), but still, can a "normal" person really understand?

But then, a normal partner could be a nice steady stable rock to lean on, which could have a positive effect on you. Could a bipolar partner make you less stabile (i.e. more & stronger moodswings)??

maybe not so hypothetical...

I had a very restless relationship with my ex-boyfriend. When we were together it was fun, but it never lasted long. It was like a traffic light, constantly on/off. Sometimes we would decide it might be easier if we would be just friends, but that never worked...

Since, I have found out that I have cyclothymia. And I have a strong suspicion that he might too! It would explain everything! I was more open to the idea of being bipolar to start with cos of family history, but it still took me quite some time to come to terms with.

Now my ex is asking for a second chance. And I'm not sure. On 1 side I want to, cos it's fun, and I like him & being with him. He can have a positive effect on me sometimes. On the other side, how long will it last? Will he make me worse? Will I make him worse? How do I tell him that he might be bipolar too? Will he accept that? Would it not be better to look for a normal/stable partner?

Any thoughts??
